Taking Notes

What's up with people not taking notes?

When I was last a full-time student, lecture meant that it was time to scribble madly as you attempted to get everything important down on paper. Occasionally, a professor would put his or her lecture notes on reserve in the library. I don't think I ever had reason to access them.

These days, almost no one takes notes. At all. And why should they since the professors put all their PowerPoint presentations on web-based blackboards. Or then there's Dr. Drone, who actually hands out the printed versions of his PowerPoints before he even launches the lecture.

I feel like my time is being wasted. It makes me uneasy. I want to write down facts and figures. Plus, I feel like these people are a tad lazy. Write, damn you! Write madly! You'll need those notes. This is your one chance to get them down! Oh wait, never mind, that's just not true anymore...

For me, writing things down is how I learn things. If I just listened to a lecture and got the notes off the internet, I would retain very little....

I learn like Jo(e)... the act of writing helps etch the material into my brain in a way that just listening never could.

Exactly.

I learn like you all also ... visual-tactile, I guess. I still take notes while I'm at work. Everyone just looks at me kinda funny.

Wait! Slow down! Let's see, "When was the last..." say that again.

What's the point of GOING to school anymore? Maybe my correspondence education is all that is needed.

I used to take notes as one way of learning, listen as another, reread them as another--the more different channels, the better I learn. Teaching or telling someone else about it or reading it aloud to a taperecorder is yet one more way.

I wish you were in my class! I have students who don't take notes and I refuse to put my powerpoints online for them. I have no idea what they are thinking!
