Summer Fun

Walk or bike ride? Walk.

Favorite picnic food? I'm not really a picnic person. I like potato salad and mac salad, but I'd rather throw a pb&j in a backpack and climb a mountain.

Pool or lake? Lake.

Favorite flavor of ice cream? Cinnamon buns. Chocolate chip cookie dough. Or vanilla in a pinch. Bring on ALL the ice cream. Except chocolate 'cause that's nasty.

Ice cream cone or in a dish? Dish. No thanks on the soggy, drippy cone mess.

Flip flops or slides? Neither really. I prefer Teva style sandals that stay on your feet. That said, I do want something I can just slip on and off for the ease of running in and out of the house this summer when we're playing in the yard.

Jean shorts or jean capris? Again, neither really. I don't love jean material. So restrictive. I'm all about comfort.

Favorite summer fruit? Berries. Apricots.

Corn on the cob or cut off the cob? On the cob. Plain. No butter or salt.

Favorite summertime song? Summertime by The Sundays. Or DJ Jazzy Jeff. Or Janis Joplin.

Favorite summertime activity? Hiking.

Favorite berry? Black raspberries.

Bikinis, tankinis or one pieces? I haven't gone swimming in years. I have a two piece with a skirt bottom. Unless the elastic is shot I see no reason to buy another one.

Dresses or skirts? Dresses. I like not having anything squeezing my mid-section.

One word to describe summer? Hot. Haha.

Inspired by Beth.

10 Items in Your Car

I used to have a super neat car. Not clean, but neat. I didn't let anything pile up or collect in the car. And then I had a baby. I could easily list WAY more than 10 items that ride around in the car all the time.
  1. Winter hat, big mittens, fleece gloves. Because it's still WINTER apparently.
  2. Pile of car toys: elephant, caterpillar, watering can, blue car, tiny tiny piggy, 2 wooden trains, a dump truck...
  3. Box of tissues
  4. Snow brush (this is in the car year round, regardless of the never ending WINTER)
  5. Folding bike (not that I've been using it for the last week, because WINTER)
  6. Picnic blanket
  7.  A slew of CDs I never listen to
  8. Bike helmet
  9. Baby blanket (for diaper changing purposes)
  10. Old towel (for mud, vomit, whatever)

50 Things About ME: Now with Updates

Since I first posted this more than 10 years ago, I thought it might be fun to redo it and make changes to make it more current and up-to-date. Changes will be added in red.

1. I do not like ice in my beverages. I prefer most at room temperature or just slightly cool. (I think I should've been born in Europe because I also don't like air conditioning. Or foods served at extreme temperatures.)

2. I do not like lemon in my water. Gak. And no, I can't just pick it out.

3. I have lived in 3 states: NY, MA, & FL.

4. I always wanted freckles. I threaten to steal my little step-brother's all the time.

5. I love Anne of Green Gables (freckles!) and believe in kindred spirits and the depths of despair.

6. I've been inside my "house of dreams" but couldn't afford it at the time.

7. I think everyone should drive Smart Cars. The world would be safer and happier. And cuter. But since that will never happen I would actually like a bigger car. More room and safer. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

8. I've only climbed 3 of the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks. I dream of one day being a 46er, but every summer passes without me doing anything about it. I've now climbed 21 of the High Peaks but have had to take a few years off while pregnant and mothering a young child. This is still most definitely a life goal of mine.

9. I love good sushi, especially the Dynamite roll I used to get at the Beach in FL. Kinda over sushi now. I never eat it anymore.

10. I never had a curfew growing up.

11. I never got grounded either.

12. My first car was a Renault. The heat was broken on, the window cranks had no knobs, the speedometer was broken, and the doors didn't lock, but I loved it.

13. I crochet scarves and blankets. I don't crochet anymore.

14. I want to be a mom. I AM a mom.

15. In fact, I actually look forward to pregnancy itself. I HATED being pregnant.

16. I am not career driven. Ideally, I would like to be a stay-at-home-mom. But since we are not independently wealthy, that will never happen. As a single mom, this dream is dead.

17. My hair is beyond straight and baby fine. I am constantly considering getting a body wave like I had in middle school, but people are always talking me out of it. I don't care about my hair anymore. If it's clean occasionally that's good enough.

18. I love soynut butter.

19. If given a choice, I would almost always chose to have tofu in a dish rather than meat (i.e. in Thai or Chinese).

20. I had my first paid job as a camp naturalist (counselor) at the age of 17. I'd volunteered for 40 hours a week for at least the two summers prior to that at the same educational day camp.

21. I worked as an IMAX projectionist, retail assistant manager, and naturalist before getting into my current career as an office lady.

22. The thumb on my left hand is double-jointed. So are my hips.

23. I can still put my feet behind my head if I try. I haven't tried this recently, but I suspect I would still be able to.

24. I have 4 piercings: both ear lobes, belly button, and tragus. I took the belly button out when pregnant, so that's down to 3.

25. I have one tattoo: a star on the top of my right foot. I have two tattoos now. The second is a quote on the left side of my ribcage.

26. I have a Darwin's Tubercle on my left ear.

27. I am a very light sleeper.

28. I took 5 1/2 years of French in high school and regret having not kept up with it since then.

28. I am extremely sensitive to caffeine and try never to drink any after noon. Thanks, Dad, for passing that trait on.

29. The fact that I don't have clear skin has been a huge issue for me and my self-esteem. I wish I had not been told that I would outgrow my pimples after I left my teen years behind. What a lie and a let down.

30. I am a jeans and sweatshirt kinda gal. Unless I'm home. Then I'm a sweatpants and no bra kinda woman.

31. I collect postcards.

32. My best first kiss story was the time Christian and I went to the dump in Long Lake to look for bears.

33. I have been donating blood since high school. I've recently been turned off by the American Red Cross because they call me at all hours. Sunday, 9pm. That does not put me in a giving mood.

34. I am a bit of a control freak and tend towards the obsessive.

35. I am, however, not neat and clean when it comes to keeping house.

36. I do not like beer. Or most liquor.

37. I enjoy classical music and opera.

38. I was sweet sixteen and never been kissed. (I do not count the kindergarten boyfriend's kisses, you see.)

39. I have a wicked sweet tooth.

40. Bungalows are my favorite style of houses. Now I would prefer anything one level with laundry on the main floor.

41. I like simple, clutter-free decor. Preferably country or farm-style. And yet, my house is one big fat clutter.

42. I am allergic to dust, mold, and some pollen. Aren't we all?

43. Both of my eyes are -4.25. I wear contacts whenever possible. I have no idea what my prescription is currently. My eyes have improved and are now -3 something and no longer the same in both eyes. I only wear glasses now.

44. The first concert I went to was PHISH, New Year's Eve '93 in Worcester MA. What an experience.

45. I am a dog person. I do not believe that cats are designed for indoor use. I am a guinea pig person now.

46. I like taking snapshots of people I know. I like taking pictures of my son.

47. I have excellent short-term memory and awful long-term memory. I excelled at classes that involved memorization, like French and dendrology.

48. I started watching Star Trek: TNG because I thought Ensign Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) was cute. I liked Voyager quite a bit, but never got into DS9 because of the Ferengi. Yuck.

49. I have a weakness for shoes and purses. I don't buy purses anymore.

50. I love pasta and bread and all things starch.

Secret Santa Mug Swap 2017

Last month I signed up to participate in the Secret Santa Mug Swap 2017 hosted by San. After seeing how much fun it was last year I couldn't resist. And when my mug arrived from Beth it couldn't have been more perfect. I LOVE this saying and yet, surprisingly enough, I didn't own anything with it. Now I do! Many thanks to my Secret Santa Beth for the mug and to San for organizing our #SecretSantaMugSwap2017!

Christmas Q&A

Real or Fake Tree? Real, of course.

Favorite Christmas cookie? Oreo cookie balls. Fudge.

Home or Travel for Christmas? Home and family (local).

White or Multi-color lights? White. I wanted to switch to color for the benefit of my son because it seems more FUN, but after spending $40 on the tree, I didn't want to spend any more money on new lights.

Christmas cards? Not this year.

Favorite gift received and/or given? This is a difficult question because I have a really bad memory, but the first thing that popped into my mind was the snowshoes my dad made for my sister and me. The sinew(?) was bad, so they can't be used, but I love that he MADE them for us. I need to hang them up in my house somewhere.

Stockings or No stockings? Yes, a stocking for my son.

Christmas pajamas? No. I really wanted to get matching jammies for me and my son this year, but again, I didn't want to spend the money.

Favorite Christmas song? I love Christmas music! Almost all of it, except that horrible song about the shoes.

Favorite holiday tradition? Traditions are changing and developing with the new kids in the family and the death of our stepmom. So I don't think I have an answer to this.

Early shopper or last minute? Both. Online!

Favorite Christmas movie? Classic: It's a Wonderful Life. Modern: The Holiday. I love Christmas movies!

Favorite holiday beverage? I used to love eggnog (maybe with a dash of amaretto), but I only like the kind with no spices so it just tastes like melted vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately, I don't know what brand my stepmom used to buy. I'm also a big fan of hot chocolate. I would love to try some of Starbucks fancy flavors. The last one I bought from a small coffee shop was horrible though, and bad hot chocolate is the worst.

Cookies and milk for Santa? I've never done it before, so I'm not sure.

As seen on The Emi Times.

Favorite Candy

Everyone that knows me or has read this blog knows I have an ENORMOUS sweet tooth. I primarily go for chocolate when I need a sugar fix. Here are some of my favorites:
  1. Dove milk chocolates (especially the hearts for Valentine's Day)
  2. Cadbury Creme Eggs
  3. Guylian Belgian Chocolates (the hazelnut truffle ones shaped like seashells)
  4. Lindt Truffles
  5. Milka chocolate bars (especially with Oreo cookies)
  6. Ghirardelli chocolate squares with caramel
  7. Twix
  8. Milky Way
  9. Reece's Peanut Butter Cups (I have to be in the right mood for these)
  10. 3 Musketeers
But don't worry, in a pinch I'll happily eat a couple dozen Hershey's Kisses (or Hugs). Or, you know, anything else made with milk chocolate. Keep that nasty dark shit away from me and don't contaminate my chocolate with nuts. The horror.

Friday Fun - Gifts

I work with (for) some very lovely generous people, one of whom brought me these adorable handmade chocolates today. I will not admit to how many I've already consumed, but I did discover that if I pull their ears off first they are even tastier. (The ears are peanuts - yuck.) It does make me feel a tiny bit mean though.

Over the last few weeks the same individual has also gifted me a Jacquie Lawson advent calendar and a blooming paperwhite. She clearly has very well-honed gift giving skills.

Imaginary Lives

Recently I read a post at I, MayB about imaginary lives. The exercise stems from the book, The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. My mom gave me this book during the summer of 1998. I was struggling with my first post-college summer job, living alone in the middle of nowhere several hours from home. With this and several other books, my mom got me in the habit of daily writing. Morning pages, or practice writing as I prefer not to limit myself to writing first thing in the morning, has been part of my life ever since.

Coming up with five imaginary lives is one of the tasks at the end of chapter one. I'm not going to dig out my notebooks from 1998 to look for my response from back then, so I will pretend I've never done it before (which isn't much of a stretch since my memory is so bad I don't actually recall doing any of the tasks in the book).

1. Writer - This probably doesn't need much explaining. I think I've made my interest in writing pretty plain over the years.

2. Park Ranger - Specifically at a National Park like Yellowstone or Yosemite. It would be so awesome to work somewhere like that every day!

3. Actress - Hey, we're imagining things here, right? I'd particularly like to be an actress in the Star Trek franchise. If not that, then maybe General Hospital.

4. Nun - Obviously, this is a bit of a stretch considering I'm not Catholic (or religious AT ALL), but I find nuns fascinating. This may be a side-effect of my life-long love of The Sound of Music.

5. Literary Agent - Books! More books! The publishing industry seems like a perfect career for book-lovers like me.

Some of these are things I would actually be interested in doing in real life. Some are not. I bet you can guess which are which.

What imaginary lives would you lead?

The Return of Ice Cream Season

We've had some very summer-like weather recently. Hot temperatures always inspire me to want ice cream. I favor a cinnamon bun flavored creation, but will eat a wide variety of flavors of B&J's, whereas my boyfriend only eats some weird half-baked thing (chocolate ice cream! the horror!). His flavor must be the most popular because it is rarely in stock. After pawing through the freezer case, I heaved a big sigh and turned to stomp off. An employee that was stocking nearby heard me and politely inquired if I was finding everything OK. Um, no, as a matter of fact, I wasn't. So off to the stockroom he went to return triumphantly with my ice cream in hand.

So a few days later when I happened to be back at the same store, and yet again found myself pawing hopelessly for the half-baked nonsense, I knew that it might be possible to find some in the back. There was no helpful stocker lad this time though, so I went up to the front near the cashiers and solicited assistance from a manager type. A few minutes later he directed me back to frozen foods where the same stocker lad held several pints for me. Not embarrassing at all. I tried to explain that the ice cream wasn't for me, but he wasn't fooled, taking note as I scooped up a pint of cinnamon buns too.

Next time my boyfriend will be doing the ice cream shopping!

Red

I'm drawn to red things designed for use during an emergency. Yesterday I rode a shuttle bus from my suburbs into the Fair. As I stood, swaying, and trying not to vomit, packed in like a sardine, I kept imagining pulling the bright red handle on the window nearest me. When I worked as a movie projectionist there was a giant bright red button that would shut down the whole unit. Every shift I would eye it greedily, so tempted to give it a good whack. I never did, and now I can't even remember if I was ever in the room when it had to be used (I was most definitely in the building). Sometimes I'm not sure how I've managed to resist these temptations.

Junk in the Trunk

Yesterday evening when I picked up my parents at the airport, I popped the trunk to load their luggage and was amused with what lives in there year round. Atop needles from my Christmas tree from two years ago is:
  • a pair of snowshoes
  • a pair of rollerblades
  • a folding padded bleacher chair
  • several old towels for the dogs
  • a sunhat
  • a picnic blanket
Do you have permanent fixtures in your trunk?

I Love Your Blog

Momma Val has bestowed the I Love Your Blog award on me. I am honored and tickled pink. It's always nice to know people enjoy reading what I'm writing.

Part of accepting this award is:
  • Displaying the award.
  • Linking back to the person who gave it to you.
  • Paying it forward & nominating 7 blogs.
  • Leaving comments on their blogs telling them they’ve received one.
  • Enjoying the award.
As soon as I can figure out how to display the award I will. I'm having a slow moment. As for my 7 nominees:
  1. Lake Loop
  2. No Polar Coordinates
  3. Smellyann Strikes Again
  4. Just Crazy Enough to Try
  5. That Silly Mommy
OK, that's all I've got. For 6 & 7, I'd give the award to Momma Val and Squirrel Chatter, but they already got it.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

I'd forgotten how much I love St. Paddy's Day. Not because of the green beer or the drunken singing (although I was sort of wishing for a shamrock shake). FF disliked St. Patrick's Day, so we never acknowledged it, other than with his yearly grumblings. Today I decided to go back to my ways.

I donned a green shirt and a pair of shamrock earrings that I've had since I was a wee lass. I wished everyone a happy day and eagerly put the strings of green beads around my neck when they were given to me by a co-worker.

I do have Irish blood in me veins, but as the saying goes, "Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day."

Next year, just wait! I'll be sporting buttons and silly hats!

Friendship Bread

One of my co-workers brought in three big ziploc bags and left them on the table in the kitchen with photocopied instructions. The bags contain starter batter for Amish Friendship Bread. It involves 10 days of mushing the ingredients inside the bag and then splitting the batter to share with three friends. Not having any friends in the area I was reluctant to take one of the bags initially, but I like the idea. So I went back and took one. Tomorrow will be day six, the first day that I'll get to do something other than mush the slop around. The part that I don't really understand is the recipe calls for vanilla pudding mix. This is supposed to be an Amish tradition. Did they use pudding mix? It seems out of place. I'm also trying to ignore the whole chain letter feel.

Mellow Weekend

I'm enjoying a mellow weekend of Christmas carols and TV watching. I went out yesterday afternoon to buy a Christmas gift and another one that I'd ordered online arrived in the mail, so now I have two gifts to give. I've been spending oodles of time at Etsy checking out all the homemade and vintage items. It makes me feel a lot less like caving into the mad consumerism, but some of the people I have to buy for aren't exactly etsy-people.

If any of you are Etsy shoppers and would like to recommend certain sellers, I'd love to browse for ideas...

I wish I had supplies to bake some cookies, but I have no intention of going outside in this snow. Assuming I could even get out of the driveway....

New Laptop

I am blogging from my shiny new laptop! Yes, you read that correctly. Santa Claus delivered me an early present today. A new toy to play with. It's particularly nice to be sitting on the couch with a blanket and still be on the internet. Not to mention that I can now do my computing in a section of the house that I regularly heat. Bonus.

What's that about schoolwork you say? Bah! I'd much rather just play...

(Thank you Santa!)

Office Goodies

I love it when people bring in goodies to share with the office. I was particularly enamoured with today's yummy dessert, and it sounds very simple.

Take two of the tubes of refrigerated sugar cookie dough and spread them out on a cookie sheet in a bar-like fashion. Cook for 10-11 minutes. Let cool. Spread with store-bought buttercream frosting and dot with fresh blueberries and raspberries.

Enjoy!
