Friendship Bread

One of my co-workers brought in three big ziploc bags and left them on the table in the kitchen with photocopied instructions. The bags contain starter batter for Amish Friendship Bread. It involves 10 days of mushing the ingredients inside the bag and then splitting the batter to share with three friends. Not having any friends in the area I was reluctant to take one of the bags initially, but I like the idea. So I went back and took one. Tomorrow will be day six, the first day that I'll get to do something other than mush the slop around. The part that I don't really understand is the recipe calls for vanilla pudding mix. This is supposed to be an Amish tradition. Did they use pudding mix? It seems out of place. I'm also trying to ignore the whole chain letter feel.

My brother used to do this for the holidays ... I don't remember any pudding though.

I've heard of this before. But not the pudding part. It does sound a little like a chain letter, but hopefully more loving.

Pudding! Powdered pudding? I can't decide if I am more squicked or intrigued. Having never voluntarily consumed pudding, I am leaning towards the former.

I asked the same thing - "Amish? Instant pudding?"

However, its tasty.

And if you google around a bit, you can find recipes fo rdifferent things to do with it that don't involve instant pudding. Like waffles, pancakes, apple bread, and more. We kept ours going for quite awhile.

You can also freeze it after dividing, pull it out and treat it like its Day 1 and you're good to go.

If you find yourself with too much, mail me some :)

Vanilla pudding mix? I think the Amish got the recipe off the internet.
